Haiti. 10 months later

These are dark days in Haiti, darker than ever. Ten months after the earthquake that ravaged this already beleaguered country, killing 250 000 people and leaving more than one million homeless. How were things moving forward, what had changed, and what is the long-term impact of the devastating quake? Ten months later there is little evidence of progress but the country is living in fear.

The millions of families who lost everything and set up camp in precarious shelters, tents, tarps, or wherever they could find a bit of room? They have not moved. Ten months later in the very centre of town, directly across from the Presidential palace, the view is unchanged. Two thousand families are living in a permanent state of insecurity and without basic supplies, water, or electricity. And everywhere, on every public square and every vacant lot, the encampments appear to be there to stay. Hope has given way to frustration. No one believes in the promise of change any more.

And then there is fear: fear of a little-known sickness, a bacteria able to kill in four short hours. A bacteria no one had ever heard of. The disease is easily treated – but without sufficient resources the dead are counted by the thousand. All in a state of confusion: so little is known about this disease.

After January 12, everyone was a victim; everyone suffered in the same way. Rich and poor alike were affected and the shock was evenly distributed. With the passing of time and the stagnation of living conditions, this solidarity has given way to divisions. Then came the election campaign. The results of the first round of voting surprised everyone. People felt a great need for justice.

The coming weeks will be crucial for this country that so desperately needs calm. But the crisis the elections set off is the last straw. The donkey’s back is breaking.

Festival Visa pour l’Image

All of Stigmat Photo’s crew will be in Perpignan, France next September to participate to the 22nd edition of the international photojournalism festival : Visa pour l’image. Maxime Corneau is in British-Columbia working on his long term project on the wood industry. He will be back in Quebec mid-july, before heading to Belize.

En quelques jours à peine, près de 100 000 supporteurs maoïstes ont convergé vers la capitale en préparation du 1er mai, Fête du Travail, un événement central au programme communiste / maoïste. Mr. Dahal leader of the Maoïst Party of Nepal better known under his nom de guerre Prachanda, spoke in front of thousands of followers gathered in Kathmandu on May 1st, while the government in place was firmly waiting for the event.
In just a few days, around 100 000 Maoist supporters converged toward the capital in preparation for Labor Day, a central event in for communists and Maoists alike. Since then, the political landscape in Nepal is all the more uncertain. Here’s a portrait of the Mountain Maoists in Nepal.

Le groupe Juarez est constitué de plus ou moins 45 jeunes vivant dans les rues de la ville près du centre historique de Mexico. La rue constitue, pour la plupart, un lieu plus sain que leur propre famille. Ils y mangent, se lavent, dorment, travaillent, rêvent et se droguent. Le 200 mètres de rue qu’ils se sont appropriés est hostile et un malaise règne parmi les passants. Le mode de survie est intimement lié à leur quotidien et 95 % de ces jeunes sont dépendants du solvant. Selon l’UNESCO, ils seraient un peu plus de 10 000 à vivre dans ces conditions à Mexico, un chiffre bien conservateur si l’on pense à la difficulté d’effectuer un tel recensement. À l’intérieur de ce groupe, 3 jeunes filles sont enceintes et deux des plus jeunes sont des enfants issues de la rue.

The Juarez Gang is formed of around 45 youngsters living on the streets of the historic city of Mexico. For them living on the streets represents a better alternative to their own families. This is where they ear, wash themselves, sleep, work, dream and take drugs. The 200 meter-long stretch that the gang occupies on the streets is hostile and makes any passerby feel uneasy. Survival is a daily reality for them and 95% of these young people are addicted to inhaling paint solvent. According to a UNESCO estimate, a little over 10 000 people live under those conditions conditions in Mexico City, a very conservative number, taking into account difficulty making of gathering such data. Within the Juarez Gang, 3 young girls are pregnant and 2 of the youngest children are kids born in the streets.

En 2002, la communauté cistercienne d’Oka compte à peine une trentaine de moines. Le monastère qui accueillait jusqu’à 150 d’entre eux en 1950 est devenu trop grand. De plus, désirant retrouver une certaine solitude, la communauté choisit de construire un nouveau monastère.

En mars 2009, la trentaine de moines restants emménagent dans leur nouvelle abbaye. Depuis leur arrivée, tous s’acclimatent comme ils le peuvent à ce changement de cloître, mais une question se pose : est-ce pour eux la chance d’un nouveau départ de la communauté, ou la tranquille disparition d’un élément majeur de la société québécoise?

A new start

In 2002, the Cistercian community of Oka hardly gathered around 30 monks. The monastery, which used to host as far as 150 of them in 1950, became too big. Furthermore, wishing to find a certain solitude, the community chose to build a new monastery.

In march 2009, the 30 remaining monks moved to their new abbey. Since their arrival, all the monks have acclimatized as they could to their new environment, but a question remains: is it for them a chance of a renewed start or on the contrary, the quiet and slow disappearance of a major element of the Quebec society?

À Konya, en Turquie, survit une tradition millénaire. Fondée dans cette ville sainte au XIIIe siècle par Djalâl ad-Dîn Rûmî, l’ordre Mevlevi est un ordre musulman soufi dont les membres sont souvent appelés « derviches tourneurs ». Leur danse, sorte de méditations appelées samâ, entraine l’état de transe lorsque les derviches tournent sur eux-mêmes. La main droite dirigée vers le ciel recueille la grâce d’Allah, celle de la main gauche dirigée vers la terre l’y répand. Lors de la révolution de 1925, l’ordre fut déclaré hors-la-loi en Turquie et le Mevlevi Hane de Konya, où se trouve le tombeau de Djalâl ad-Dîn Rûmî, fut converti en musée par Atatürk. En 1950, le gouvernement turc légalisa l’ordre à nouveau et permit aux Derviches tourneurs de faire une représentation annuelle le 19 décembre, date anniversaire de la mort de Djalâl ad-Dîn Rûmî.

Mawlawi Order

In Konya, Turkey, a tradition has been surviving for millenniums. Founded in this holy city in the XIIIe century by Djalâl ad-Dîn Rûmî, Mevlevi Order is a Muslim soufi order, members of which are often called the « Whirling Dervishes ». Their dance, a kind of meditation called Samâ, brings the performer to a state of trance when the dervishes turn round. The right hand, extended towards the sky collects Allah’s grace, while the left hand extended toward the earth spreads it. During the 1925 revolution, the order was outlawed in Turkey and the Mevlevi Hane of Konya, where the grave of Djalâl ad-Dîn Rûmî is located was transformed into a museum by Atatürk. In 1950, the Turkish government legalized the Order again and allowed the Whirling Dervishes to perform an annual representation on the December 19th for the anniversary of the death of Djalâl ad-Dîn Rûmî.

Voici les premières images d’un groupe de 45 jeunes qui vivent dans les rues de la ville près du centre historique de Mexico. Le mode de survie est imbriqué à leur quotidien et quatre-vingt-quinze pour cent de ces jeunes sont dépendant du solvant. Selon l’Unesco, ils seraient un peu plus de 10 000 à vivre dans ces conditions à Mexico, un chiffre bien conservateur si l’on pense à la difficulté d’un tel recensement. À l’intérieur de ce groupe suivit par Philippe Ruel durant 6 semaines, 3 jeunes filles sont enceintes et deux des plus jeunes sont des enfants issues de la rue. Ceci poursuit une série d’images amorcée en 2007.

1er mai 2010,

Stigmat Photo a reçu la permission exclusive de suivre le leader des Maoïstes au Népal, M. Pushpa Kamal Dahal, ancien chef de la guérilla maoïstes qui a fait 13 000 morts au Népal. Dahal, mieux connu sous son nom de guerre ‘Prachanda’, s’adressera aujourd’hui aux milliers de partisans à Katmandou alors que le gouvernement en place les attends déjà de pied ferme.

Depuis plusieurs semaines, la pression politique au Népal augmente rapidement. Les maoïstes (Unified Communist Party of Nepal) ont récemment exigé que le Premier Ministre renonce à son poste. Aujourd’hui, ce dernier a catégoriquement refusé de céder aux pressions des maoïstes.

Ce récent développement précède une journée cruciale dans l’histoire politique du pays.
En quelques jours à peine, près de 100 000 supporteurs maoïstes ont convergé vers la capitale, certains d’entre eux interceptés avec grenades, armes blanches et autres explosifs improvisés.

Ils se regroupent pour participer aux démonstrations du 1er mai, Fête du Travail, un événement central au programme communiste.

Stigmat Photo has been granted exclusive access to follow the Chairman of the Maoist Party of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal. Dahal is the former Maoist guerrilla leader in Nepal’s ‘People’s War’ that led to the death of 13 000 people. Better known by his nom de guerre ‘Prachanda’, Dahal will address the crowds in Kathmandu while the government is already awaiting the masses resolutely.

For several weeks now, the political pressure has been increasing rapidly in Nepal. The Maoists (Communist Party of Nepal Unified) have recently demanded that the Prime Minister resigns. Today, he has categorically refused to bow to pressure from the Maoists.

This recent development precedes a crucial day in the country’s political history.
In only few days ago, nearly 100,000 Maoists supporters converged to the capital to take part in the demonstrations, some of them coming to Kathmandu intercepted with grenades, knives and other improvised explosives.

They come together to participate in mass demonstrations and gathering of May 1, Labour Day, an event central to the communist program.

Le 22 avril marque le 40e anniversaire de la Journée Mondiale de la Terre.
Du Népal, David Brulotte présente deux photoreportages pour cette occasion spéciale.

Dans les dernières années, le Népal a été secoué par des changements politiques intenses. Après la ‘People’s War’ de 10 ans et l’abolition de la Monarchie, une nouvelle constitution doit maintenant être écrite par d’anciens ennemis, avant le 28 mai prochain. Pendant ce temps et loin des batailles politiques au Parlement, les résidents de Katmandou sont tous les jours confrontés à un nombre grandissant de problèmes qui s’aggravent et affectent leurs vies.

La culture des ‘bandh’, ou grèves, est endémique au Népal: près de 300 jours de grèves dans l’ensemble du Népal en 2009. Trash Town explore les conséquences des récentes grèves par les employés municipaux de la Capitale. À deux reprises en 4 mois, les ordures n’ont pas été ramassées et se sont accumulées dans les rues de Katmandou créant un mélange unique d’odeurs nauséabondes et devenant source d’inquiétude pour la santé des habitants de la vallée.

From Nepal, David Brulotte presents two features for this special occasion.

In the recent years, Nepal has been experiencing intense political turmoil and changes. After a 10 year long ‘People’s War’ and the abolition of the Monarchy, a new constitution is to be written by former foes by May 28th, 2010. Meanwhile and far from the political struggle in parliament, residents of Kathmandu face a number of aggravating issues in their daily lives.

The culture of bandh, or strikes, is endemic in Nepal: almost 300 working days in total, all over Nepal in 2009. Trash Town explores the recent effects of strikes by civil servants on the streets of the Capital City. Twice in 4 months, garbage was left in the open streets of Kathmandu creating a unique, unpleasant mixture of odours and raising safety concerns for the inhabitants of the valley.

Water Valley est un projet de longue haleine qui explore les manques chroniques en eau potable au Népal. Ce petit pays d’Asie du Sud au centre duquel est juché l’Himalaya fait face à des pénuries chroniques et sévères d’eau potable dans la vallée de Katmandou et dans le reste du pays. Le Népal fait présentement face à des coupures d’électricité de 12 heures par jour, malgré le fait qu’une importante partie de l’énergie provienne de l’hydroélectricité. Les averses de pluie anormalement peu fréquentes et peu abondantes et les problèmes de gestion des ressources ont contrait ce pays riche en eau à des sécheresses, pénuries en eau potable et force maintenant ses habitants à acheter de l’eau, une ressource jusqu’ici gratuite et surabondante.

Water Valley is a long-term project on water shortages in Nepal. While the South Asian country is blessed with the Himalayas, Nepal is facing a severe shortage of drinkable water in the Kathmandu Valley and elsewhere in the country. Nepal is now facing daily 12 hours power cuts, or load shedding even if an important amount of electricity produced in the country comes from hydroelectricity. The low levels of rain, as well as management issues have plagued a country rich in water resources to important droughts, shortages of pure water and forced its inhabitant to buy a previously free, bountiful resource.

Philippe Ruel revient d’un récent voyage au Mexique, où il a passé trois mois auprès des enfants et des groupes de rue de la capitale, Mexico. Philippe en était à son second voyage à Mexico afin de poursuivre un projet de longue haleine entammé en 2007. Philippe sera également conférencier invité au Musée National des Beaux Arts du Québec en mai prochain.

Philippe Ruel has recently retuned from Mexico, where he spent three months working with street children and gangs of Mexico City. This was Philippe’s second long term stay in Mexico City to continue the work he began for this project initiated in 2007. Philippe will also be an invited guest speaker at the Musée National des Beaux Arts du Québec in May.

Larry Rochefort travaille présentement sur la production visuelle de Tout Le Monde s’en Fout (TLMSF) un hebdomadaire unique produit pour la radio et la television simultanément. TLMSF présente un robuste contenu editorial et une programmation culturelle des plus avant-gardiste.

Larry Rochefort is currently working with on the visual production of Tout Le Monde s’en Fout (TLMSF) a unique weekly simultaneous radio and television show with a strong editorial content and a cutting edge cultural program.

Maxime Corneau est présentement dans le nord de la Colombie-Britanique et y produit un documentaire photo sur l‘industrie forestière, plus particulièrement axé sur le mode de vie et la réalité des reboiseurs. Ces employés saisonniers sont en charge de la mise en terre de jeunes pins et épinettes une fois la coupe effectuée. Ces travailleurs peuvent planter jusqu’à 4000 arbres par jour.

Maxime Corneau is now in northern British Columbia and he is producing a photo documentary on the forest industry, especially focusing on the lifestyle and the reality of foresters. These seasonal employees are responsible for the planting of young pines and spruces when the cut is made. These workers can plant up to 4,000 trees per day.

The last months have been very busy for Stigmat Photo, to say the least.

Renaud Philippe returned from Haiti, after over a week of intense coverage on the devastated island. His work on the aftermath of the terrible earthquake that struck the island nation has been widely distributed in Quebec, Canada and abroad. He currently holds a solo exhibition at the Museum of Civilisation: Haïti : Espwa Kouwaj

Maxime Corneau embedded with Canadian Forces

Covering the disaster and the relief efforts from a different angle, Maxime Corneau left for Haiti a few days only after Renaud Philippe was evacuated from Haiti and reached Canadian soil. Maxime was embedded for 48 hours with the Canadian military joining the international help relief, on their express journey from Quebec to Haiti onboard a Hercule cargo aircraft and on the Athabaskan Destroyer shuttling between Jamaica and Haiti.

Philippe Ruel est présentement au Mexique pour y terminer un reportage initié en 2007 sur les enfants et adolescents vivant dans les rues de la ville de Mexico.

Aussi, dans le contenu des reportages se retrouvant sur ce blog, il jettera un œil sur ce pays aux inégalités grandissantes qui, depuis la signature du Traité de Libre Échange Nord-Américain, a vu sa classe économique moyenne presque totalement disparaître. Les petits commerces aux détails, la classe ouvrière, les jeunes étudiants et les natifs, sont plus particulièrement touchés par cette nouvelle réalité financière.

Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Riviera Maya ainsi que tous les autres ‘’tout inclus’’ du Mexique ne sont en faites que des rêves touristiques faussés. Le vrai Mexique, c’est celui des gens qui n’ont pas de compte de banque, c’est celui de la ‘’ vida al dia ‘’ Vivre au jour le jour, c’est celui du ‘’ Buscar la chuleta ‘’ en traduction libre : ‘’trouver l’escalope’’, c’est celui où l’on quitte sa famille et sa communauté pour aller vendre des colliers ou autres babioles dans la grande ville.

Le vrai visage du Mexique, c’est celui d’un pays où il faut se battre tous les jours pour survivre…
